Recently Finished Family Portrait

For Mother's Day this year, I surprised my mom with an early present--a drawn portrait of her and Dad.  I know I'm supposed to wait until Sunday, but I'd already waited several days and my patience of not blabbing my surprise was wearing thin.  We had a family get-together last night (Friday) and I just HAD to reveal my little secret!!

My mom was really happy and my dad teared up.   It was priceless.

Wood Burned portrait...A Work in Progress

I am almost done with my wood-burned portrait I started yesterday. There was A LOT of trial-and-error with this one since I've never done it quite this way before!  I didn't have quite the control with this wood burner that I do with a paint brush or charcoal, so the couple doesn't look as much like themselves.  :(  Bummer.  It's still a resemblance of them...I hope.  (I'll have to perfect the whole wood burning technique...).

After I burned the two faces into the wood yesterday, I tried mixing acrylic paint with a staining medium, so the wood grain and knots would still show through. As with any art project, it starts taking on a life of its own and never turns out exactly as planned.  The stain wound up looking really washed out instead of being full of color.

So, today I mixed a high-gloss, heavy gel medium with more red paint and totally repainted it.  I'm liking this much, much better.  Now, I'm just waiting for the paint to dry to see if I'm almost finished.  If so, I'll sign my name, then I'll have to paint the back of the wood, and apply ":CRAFTS ETC! Clear Acrylic High Gloss Sealer."  I do believe this is going to work!

Another Bird Painting Finished Yesterday

I just finished a commissioned 3-piece bird/tree painting. I used blues, browns, and lots of metallic colors: gold, copper, and bronze. The large splotches of what appears to be yellow and orange are really gold and copper--in person, when the lights hit the canvases, I can see the shimmer of the metallic paints.

Each canvas measures 20"x16" and when hung will measure about 5 feet in length--which will work well over a couch, over a fireplace mantle, or over a bed in your master bedroom.

If you'd like one similar, the price is $200. I can paint one to match your decor. Send me a message on my facebook fan page: Amy Kopp Art.

I'd love to paint one for you!

Here are some close ups to show the texture and metallic colors.  I mixed tiny glass beads and sand into my paint.  I love texture in art!
